If Barack Obama's Wright, Sarah Palin's Wrong

by Kyle "Scoop" Yeldell

A couple of months ago, Rev. Jeremiah Wright was a household name. He was poppin’ on YouTube like Soulja Boy, spewing divisive comments about Hillary Clinton, and was raucously outspoken.

For almost a month, Jeremiah Wright was the topic of conversation on Fox News everyday. Megyn Kelly, Bill Hemmer, Neil Cavuto, etc. all asked the questions: “Why would Obama go to his church?”, “Why would Obama allow this man to be his advisor?,” “Why isn’t Obama distancing himself from Wright?,” “Why would Obama allow his family to go to such a church?”

Democrats would come on Fox News and other networks and say that Obama can’t control his former minister and that Wright’s actions do not reflect Obama, his beliefs nor his actions either. However, they were rebuked and the story continued.

Finally, it died down.

Last week, Sarah Palin was selected as the vice presidential candidate for the Republicans. On Monday, it was reported that Bristol Palin, her 17-year-old daughter, was pregnant.

Red flag!

Now Palin and her daughter are the subject of conversation everyday on TV networks, but the sentiment is much different. Now it is insensitive to bring up family, morals, and values into the election.

Now Kelly, Hemmer, Cavuto, etc. are asking questions like “Why are they picking on a female candidate?,” “Don’t you think this would not be discussed if she was male?,” and “Don’t you find it insensitive to bring her family into this?”

However, no one has made the correlation nor has anyone mentioned the hypocrisy that it is. It is ok to say that a man should control his minister, but not ok to say that a woman should control her oldest daughter. It is ok to question a man’s patriotism and religious values, but not question a woman’s politics and family values.

Ironically, while John McCain and Hillary Clinton fueled the fire in the Wright direction, Obama immediately made a statement, telling people to leave Palin’s family out of this. Yet no one still sees the correlation that despite being thrown to the wolves, Obama would not let the same thing happen to her.

Do I want Palin’s family exposed? No. However, I think it’s hypocritical to bring up one thing and not another. Secondly, I think Jeremiah Wright was a non-factor to Obama’s campaign and should’ve never been brought up, but this…this is an issue for the following reasons.

Obama’s campaign was not based around religious conservatism. Prior to his campaign, he had never said that religious leaders need to preach by the book and need to remove all personal thoughts from their pulpits. Obama was never known for his views on religion.

However, Palin was always known as being very pro-life, even in the case of rape, and a staunch believer of abstinence-only education. Well, as on Monday, it is painfully obvious that Palin’s latter thoughts don’t work, not just in reality, but in her own house.

This isn’t an issue about family values. A lot of good parents have children who start a family too soon, and these parents did what they can as parents. However, as a politician, your politics must be followed in order for you to be seen as successful, and for her political views to be completely thrown out of the window in her own home, this is an issue.

Her daughter is not a bad person. However, maybe Palin’s politics don’t work. If you can’t guide your children to believe in one of your biggest political views, you’re not the best politician.

Secondly, you cannot compare Palin’s recent Us Weekly cover to last week’s cover with Michelle Obama and cry “double standard”. For one, Michelle isn’t running for office. Secondly, there are no kinks to her parenting nor her politics that were made public.

With this said, to truly understand why the Palin saga is somewhat relevant, imagine this. What if John McCain, who said we should be in Iraq for 100 more years, had a son who was a conscientious objector to the war? Or if Chelsea Clinton became an executive of an HMO despite her mother’s views on universal healthcare?

How about if I am staunchly against gay marriage, but my daughter is a lesbian? I am for tax cuts for the rich, but my wealthy brother was arrested for tax evasion?

Sure, your kids have their own views, but if that is your trump card, they better be playing the same card game. That’s politics and also the reason why there is a First Lady or First Children. Your family should believe in your politics if you are a politician.

Personally, I think that all you can think about during this or any campaign is what the politician can bring if they are in office. I am choosing between Obama/Biden and McCain/Palin based on politics. I personally don’t care about their private lives too much and I think it should be removed from the political process.

I am no judge of anyone’s character or parental skills. Sarah Palin is probably a great mother, but I don’t know her. Nor do I know Barack Obama, John McCain nor Hillary Clinton well enough to say the same thing.

Jeremiah Wright nor Bristol Palin should be the topic of conversations. They are not named Barack or Sarah. However, if you bring up one, be fair. And if you claim she’s tough, let Sarah fend for herself. Lord knows you let Barack AND Hillary do it.
