Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko Threatens to Dissolve Parliament, Call Elections

Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko, frustrated with the collapse of his country’s failed coalition government, has threatened to dissolve parliament and call for elections if a new coalition is not formed within a month.

Yushchenko has been at odds with Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko and her All-Ukrainian Union party with both blaming each other for the failure of the coalition government.

Despite Yushchenko’s threats to dissolve parliament the current coalition remains a legal body which means the president does not have the authority to form a new body.

The feud between Yuschenko and Tymoshenko reached a new high last month during the Russia and Georgia conflict. Tymoshenko has sided with Russia in the conflict while Yuschenko has supported Georgia. On Tuesday Tymoshenko’s party blocked a parliamentary resolution that would have condemned Moscow.
