Dinara Safina needed just over an hour to cruise into her first semifinals at the U.S. Open, beating Flavia Pennetta in straight sets 6-2, 6-3 on Wednesday.
Safina laced only 58 percent of her first serves in play and committed 19 unforced errors in the match but managed to come up big when needed. Of her nine break point opportunities she capitalized on four of those while Pennetta had just one break point opportunity.
Safina has yet to win a Grand Slam singles title, she fell in the finals at the 2008 French Open to Ana Ivanovic.
