New Detroit Lions running back Rudi Johnson claimed that former Lions running back Tatum Bell stole two of his bags from the locker room on Monday.
Johnson said when the bags were returned Tuesday, they were empty. Apparently, someone stole his identification, credit cards, about $200 in cash and some underclothes.
Bell contends that the ordeal was a mistake and that he did not steal anything. Bell said that he meant to pick up some bags for another former teammate, and he grabbed the wrong ones. He said he never opened the bags and doesn’t have anything of Johnson’s.
Johnson visited the Lions on Monday and agreed to a one-year contract. He officially signed Tuesday, and Bell was released to make room on the 53-man roster.
Johnson placed the bags in the locker room while he held a meeting with team president Matt Millen. When he returned, the bags were gone. Johnson initially believed the team's cleaning people moved them. By Tuesday afternoon, he still had no idea where the bags were.
However, on Tuesday evening, Lions director of security Ricky Sandoval showed Johnson a surveillance video of Bell taking the bags.
Bell said that he went to pick up teammate Victor DeGrate's bag. He grabbed two bags from the computer area, thinking they were DeGrate's. Bell said he took the bags to a friend of DeGrate's, as DeGrate had asked him.
Bell and Johnson spoke about the incident, but Johnson believes that Bell intentionally stole his bags. Bell said that he is just trying to clear up his name.
