U.S. Condemns Russian Actions in Georgia, Questions Reliability as International Partner

U.S. Vice-President Dick Cheney visited Tbilisi, Georgia on Wednesday and took the opportunity to blast Russia for its recent military actions in the sovereign country as well as its continued presence within its borders.

The United States has been a vocal critic of Russia’s response to Georgian troops entering the breakaway region of South Ossetia on Aug. 7. While Russia claimed their military response was justified Cheney called the action “an invasion of your (Georgia’s) sovereign territory and an illegitimate unilateral attempt to change your country's borders by force.”

Russia maintained that it was Georgia’s actions against an independent region that sparked the conflict and their attack on Georgia was carried out to protect the citizens of South Ossetia as well as Abkhazia, a second breakaway region.

While both Russia and Georgia agreed to a peace deal brokered by France the Russians have refused to completely remove troops back to their position prior to the conflict. Russian troops remain in South Ossetia and Abkhazia as well as in a buffer zone to prevent future attacks from Georgia.

Last month Russia’s President Dmitry Medvedev officially recognized the independence of the two territories, a move that drew the condemnation of the West.

Speaking on Wednesday Cheney called Russia’s actions an “illegitimate” attempt to reshape Georgia’s borders and expressed continued support for Georgia from the United States.

According to Cheney, who was speaking alongside Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili, Russia’s reliability as an international partner is now in doubt. As for Georgia, Cheney expressed continued support for their membership into NATO.
