Sarah Palin Opens Up About Down Syndrome Heartbreak

Republican vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin has opened up about the heartbreak she suffered after discovering her unborn son had Down syndrome. Palin said she discovered her son Trig had the disease when she was 13 weeks pregnant.

Palin says she waited to tell her husband Todd after he returned from a business trip. “The good news is we have a boy. But we have a challenge,” Palin recalls telling her husband.

“Awesome! I’m getting another boy,” his response was.

The 44-year-old said she waited to tell her older children – Track, 19, Bristol, 17, Willow, 14 and Piper, -- because she “couldn’t talk about it.”

“Not knowing in my own heart if I was going to be ready to embrace a child with special needs, I couldn’t talk about it,” she says.

Trig was born 5 weeks early on April 18, 2008. Palin said all of her concern was laid to rest “the minute [Trig] was born.” When Willow first saw her new baby brother she said, “He looks like he has Down syndrome.”

“If he does, you know you will still love him Willow. It’ll be okay,” Palin replied.

Meanwhile, the Palin family will welcomed another member this fall when Bristol gives birth. After presidential candidate John McCain announced Palin as his VP pick, it was revealed the Britol was 5 months pregnant and planned to wed the father of the child, Levi Johnston.
