Prescription Pills Safer Than Cocaine, Say College Freshman

Study at the University of Maryland

A recent study by researchers from the University of Maryland found that college freshman interviewed felt that “non-medical use of prescription painkillers and stimulants is safer than taking cocaine, but riskier than smoking marijuana or drinking alcohol."

“This study, based on over 1,000 interviews, shows the misconception that most young people have on prescription drugs,” comments Mary Rieser, Executive Director for Narconon Drug Rehab in Georgia. “Drug abuse and drug addiction usually start because of lack of drug education. Why would a child abuse prescription drugs if they knew the dangers of overdose or drug addiction? They wouldn’t.”

According to Amelia Arria, PHD, of the Center for Substance Abuse Research for the University of Maryland, “This study suggests that educating students about the potential harm that can be caused by non-medical use of prescription drugs is important in reducing use of these drugs by college students.  It also shows that getting the message to students who are sensation seekers, who are a high risk group for all types of drug use, might be more of a challenge to prevention specialists.”

Obviously, providing effective drug education has become an insurmountable challenge if we look at the daily news stories about drug abuse, either prescription or illegal.  Youth are getting the message from somewhere that prescription medication is safer than other drugs and it is the thing to do.  They are also learning how to get it without much trouble.

Who is telling them anything to the contrary and whose job is it to educate our youth about the dangers of drugs?

These questions are going to have to be answered and action is going to have to be taken before this generation is completely stunted in growth.

Today, more kids are going to the web to learn about simple ways to make methamphetamine than to learn about the dangers of drugs.

Eighty percent of them are going to go to a school where they can be exposed to illegal drugs.

The lack of clear, concise and strong preventive measures is tantamount to tacit consent.
