University Vigil For Slain Footballer

Students of Pace University in Pleasantville, New York, are today mourning the death of a promising football star, who was gunned down by police over the weekend.

Danroy Henry Jr. aged 20, died early Sunday morning after police had fired on his vehicle. The incident happened in New York’s Mount Pleasant, and police said that Henry had hit two police with his car, and was driving towards a third when they opened fire on him.

The police had been called to the scene because of a disturbance in a bar parking lot at around 1 a.m. Officer’s were called to break up fights and a group of ‘unruly patrons’ outside of Finnegan's Grill in Thornton, New York.

Henry was in a car parked in the fire lane next to the bar, and accelerated into the fray. A police office tried to stop him, but according to police “ended up on the hood." A second officer was also struck by the car, and the first opened fire at Henry. When the car did not stop, a third police officer opened fire as well.

Police said that at least 50 officer were called out to disperse the brawl, which continued even after the shootings.

Henry’s parents said they doubted the police version of events, saying that "His coach called him today a man of high moral character.”

Students from Pace University held a tribute on Sunday night, carrying lights to the football field from the University Fitness Center to commemorate Henry.
