Lobbyist Jack Abramoff Sentenced to Four Years

Facing nearly a dozen years in prison on charges of conspiracy and corruption the one-time power lobbyist Jack Abramoff received a much lighter penalty as Judge Ellen Huvelle sentenced the 49-year-old to four years in prison on Thursday.

Abramoff was already serving nearly six years on fraud charges related to a Florida casino deal and Huvelle ruled that his latest sentence would be served at the same time as his current prison term. Abramoff began serving time for the fraud conviction in Nov. 2006.

As one of the most powerful lobbyists in Washington Abramoff often traded expensive travel packages, meals, sporting event tickets and other gifts to secure political favors from lawmakers.
