Angola Holding Parliamentary Elections as Voters Take to Poll for First Time in 16 Years

It has been six years since the devastating civil war in Angola ended and now citizens are taking to the polls for the first parliamentary election in 16 years.

Angola’s 27 year civil war left the country devastated but for the past six years the nation has been rebuilding itself as a stable democracy with oil-rich resources.

The elections include 14 separate parties yet the focus will be on the two main parties, President Jose Eduardo dos Santos’ MPLA Party (Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola) and the main opposition Unita Party (Union for the Total Independence of Angola).

As more than 8 million registered voters cast their ballot on Friday most expect the MPLA to hold their power in parliament, a position they have held for more than 30 years. Friday’s election is being closely watched as the country prepares for a planned presidential election nextyear.
