October 19, 2010, Braintree, MASS... This fall, when millions of Americans are enjoying the drama of the World Series, Chevrolet will be creating some drama of its own when it launches ads for the 2011 Volt during the games. Chevy will begin production of its highly anticipated electric car in mid-November, and by advertising during the World Series, the automaker is hoping to show the connection between their storied automotive history in the United States and the new eco-friendly model that will be available at the end of this year.
The Chevy Volt, running on battery power and gasoline-generated electricity, will be available first at Chevy dealers in California, New York City, Austin, Texas and Washington, D.C. The rest of Texas and New York, as well as Michigan, New Jersey and Connecticut, will receive Volts in March of 2011, with distribution to all 50 states scheduled in the following 12-18 months.
Interested customers can preorder a Volt for purchase or lease by contacting the nearest participating Chevrolet dealer, who will then confirm the vehicle for production. Customers that preorder the Volt can experience the excitement of tracking their electric cars through the production process at a Volt customer website.
The number of dealerships that will initially carry the Volt is limited, but other leading Chevrolet dealerships are receiving training and certification from the automaker to provide service for the car’s cutting-edge technology. Quirk Chevrolet in Braintree, Massachusetts is one of the selected dealers that will receive this training and be able to provide service and parts for Boston Chevrolet Volt owners.
“We’re excited about Chevrolet’s drive into the electric car market and the groundbreaking new technology of the Volt,” said Haykel Ammari, general manager of Quirk Chevrolet. “What’s great about the Volt is that, despite the bold statement made by its green engineering, its style and performance will gracefully blend in with the other cars on Massachusetts highways.”
Unlike other electric vehicles, the Volt’s power comes from two sources: a lithium-ion battery and a range-extending, gas-powered generator. The battery will run the vehicle for up to 40 miles by itself before the gas generator engages, which can keep the electric motor going for up to 300 more miles. The strength of the battery was designed with the everyday commuter in mind; Chevrolet cites a survey that found more than 75% of commuters travel 40 miles or less each day.
“This is a great car for area commuters who waste a lot of gas in the stop-and-go traffic in and around Boston,” said Ammari. “While distribution is limited at first, Volt owners in the area can count on Quirk Chevy to provide the expert care, service and parts for their Volts when they arrive.”
One of the more surprising aspects of the Volt isn’t its fuel-efficiency—a test driver at Motor Trend has recorded 127 mpg in everyday driving—but its performance. The Volt can accelerate from 0-60 mph in about 9 seconds and generates 149 horsepower from its electric engine, numbers that will silence those who doubt the power of eco-friendly cars.
