Condoleezza Rice Travels to Libya to Meet with Muammar Gaddafi

In what is being billed as an “historic” visit U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has arrived in Tripoli to meet with Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi to further strengthen relations between the two countries that had once been bitter enemies.

Those sentiments appeared to be buried last month when both sides took steps to remedy long-standing issues that affected their relationship. Gaddafi had agreed to pay hundreds of millions of dollars in compensation to victims of the 1988 Lockerbie bombing while the U.S. agreed to compensate victims of a bombing raid in Libya in 1986.

Gaddafi has yet to transfer the agreed compensation to a humanitarian account yet U.S. officials remained hopeful that issue would be remedied soon. Rice is expected to press Gaddafi on the issue during their meeting.

In 2003 Gaddafi accepted responsibility for the bombing of the plane and formally renounced terrorism and abandoned its arsenal of weapons of mass destruction. At that time the U.S. removed Libya from its list of sponsors of terrorism.

Also on tap for the meeting will be a trade and investment agreement that could be signed between the two countries.
