Weak Jobs Data Sink Stocks for Second Straight Session

 

Wall Street slid for a second straight session Friday on news that the economy shed jobs for the eighth straight month in August and at a faster-than-expected pace.

 

The Labor Department said payrolls shrank by 84,000 last month, more than the 75,000 economists predicted, and higher than the 51,000 jobs lost in July. The unemployment rate rose to a five-year high of 6.1 percent from 5.7 percent.

 

In midday trading, the Dow Jones industrial average fell 24.26, or 0.22 percent, to 11,163.97 but was well off its lows of the session.

Broader stock indicators also fell. The Standard & Poor's 500 index slid 5.50, or 0.44 percent, to 1,231.33, and the Nasdaq composite index fell 18.11, or 0.80 percent, to 2,240.93.

 

Light, sweet crude fell $2.23 to $105.66 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.
