Former NFL linebacker Junior Seau was hospitalized for minor injuries after he drove off a seaside cliff in Carlsbad; he was driving back after posting a bail at the San Diego County jail.
Seau has played with the USC and was a San Diego Chargers linebacker before he switched to the Patriots and announced his retirement at the end of last season. The ace linebacker was arrested just nine hours before the crash as his live-in girlfriend called the police claiming that he had assaulted her. He was released from the jail just before the crash after posting a bail.
Seau said he met the accident because of a sudden onslaught of slumber, a claim that has been supported by the Carlsbad police Lt. Kelly Cain. There were no traces of alcohol or drugs on Seau, according to police sources, who also said that his white Cadillac SUV plunged to about 100 feet below the roadside and landed on the beach.
He was arrested after his 25-year old girlfriend complained that he assaulted her Sunday night at his Oceanside home. She suffered from minor injuries and was released from the hospital after treatment.
Seau is a 12-time Pro Bowler and was a star linebacker with the University of Southern California before he was picked by the San Diego Chargers in the 1990 draft. He was with the Chargers when they advanced to the Super Bowl after the 1994 season. After a long stint with the Chargers, he was traded to the Miami Dolphins in 2003.
