Republicans are on the war path, and they have a ton of new cash to fuel the campaign. More than $50 million is being funneled into GOP coffers by advocacy groups such as American Action Network and American Crossroads.
The surge of cash has emboldened GOP candidates to go for the jugular in races previously though un-winnable by Republicans and the drive is threatening to drastically reshape the face of US politics at the November 2 mid-terms.
Some in the Democratic camp are fearing a loss as big as 50 House seats, with a takeover in the Senate a possibility they are not discounting. The last time such a coup was seen was in 1994, when 54 House seats were taken by the GOP in what has been dubbed the “Republican Revolution.”
While analysts are predicting slightly less dramatic sweeps of 39 seats in the House and less than the 10 needed for Senate control, the new influx of cash is seen as a big threat to Democratic candidates who may be forced to spend defensively against their cashed-up rivals. With the Democrats likely to spend on their Senate campaigns, this leaves House candidates more vulnerable.
"They're trying to get as many races onto the playing field as possible to take advantage of what might happen on Nov. 2 — so that there are just too many fires to put out for Democrats. The Democrats have a lot of money. But there just isn't enough to go around,” said Nathan Gonzales, an analyst with the Rothenberg Political Report.
