Meridia Recall Issued; Stroke, Heart Attack Among Side Effects of Meridia, Warns Lawyer Central

Lawyer Central has released a new consumer alert regarding Meridia, a prescription weight loss drug manufactured by Abbott Laboratories. Meridia has been linked to a number of heart problems, and as of Oct. 8, 2010, has been withdrawn from the U.S. market. Stroke and heart attack were among the reported side effects of Meridia, and upon comparing the drug’s risks to its weight loss benefits, the FDA could not justify Meridia’s continued presence on the market. If you or a loved one has experienced Meridia heart problems, such as stroke or heart attack, visit http://productliability.lawyercentral.com/Meridia-List-and-Descriptions-of-Dangerous-Drugs--10-41553-37.html to learn more about the Meridia recall and how it may affect your eligibility for a defective drug lawsuit.

In November 2009, the findings of a study known as SCOUT (Sibutramine Cardiovascular Outcomes Trial) prompted a Meridia recall in Europe and a FDA safety review in the United States. The study showed a 16% increase in the risk of heart attack, stroke, death and the need for resuscitation upon cardiac arrest in patients taking Meridia compared with those receiving the placebo. Furthermore, the study showed only a 2.5% difference in body weight between the two groups. After examining the drug’s risk-to-benefit ratio, the FDA asked Abbott Laboratories to issue a voluntary Meridia recall.

The study which prompted the Meridia recall was performed to show that Meridia use lowered a patient’s chances of experiencing cardiovascular side effects, but instead suggested that Meridia may actually increase the user’s risk of heart problems. If you or a loved one has suffered a heart attack, stroke or cardiac arrest while taking Meridia, you may be able to recover financial compensation in light of the recent Meridia recall.
