The Vatican Declares Homer Simpson a Catholic
Religious Newspaper Considers Cartoon Character Religious
L'Osservatore Romano, the daily Vatican newspaper, recently declared Homer Simpson a Catholic. "Few people know it, and he does everything to hide it, but it is true: Homer J. Simpson is a Catholic," stated the newspaper in a recent article. The paper also claims that Bart is Catholic as well. Curious claims, considering that Homer and Bart are both fictional cartoon characters in a show that is not particularly tied with any religion. Then again, the Simpson family has been seen going to hear Reverend Lovejoy's sermons at church on more than one occasion. But why does the Vatican think that these two cartoon icons are Catholic?
The paper defends its claims by referring to a study made by a Jesuit priest of a 2005 episode of "The Simpsons" in which Homer and Bart consider converting to the Catholic faith. "The Simpsons
are among the few TV programs for children in which Christian faith,
religion, and questions about God are recurrent themes," writes the paper, adding that the Simpsons family often "recites prayers before meals and, in
their own peculiar way, believes in the life thereafter." This is not the first time the Vatican has said something positive about "The Simpsons". According to E! Online, the show "wrote favorably of the show's approach to religion last December."
But these claims, even if somewhat true, do not necessarily mean much. After all, the Simpsons family has had more than its fair share of decidedly un-religious antics. The Simpsons are definitely not as irreverent as other cartoon families (like the Griffins of Family Guy), but they are not exactly the models of piety either. Even Al Jean, the executive producer of "The Simpsons", refutes the idea of Homer being Catholic, telling EW, "We've pretty clearly shown that Homer is not Catholic.I really don't think he could go without eating meat on Fridays—for even an hour."
