NSG Approves U.S. Proposal to Lift Nuclear Trade Restrictions with India

A U.S. proposal to lift nuclear trade restrictions with India has been approved by the 45-nation Nuclear Suppliers Group, paving the way for India to meet its growing energy demands.

India has vowed to maintain its nuclear non-proliferation agreements and continued suspension of atomic weapons testing.

As part of the deal India pledged to the NSG they would not share sensitive nuclear technology or material. Yet many member nations of the NSG opposed the lifted restrictions because India has not been required to sign the Non-Proliferation Treaty, an action all other members have had to sign.

The objecting nations also took exception to the fact India would open 14 of their civilian nuclear facilities for inspection yet their nuclear weapons sites would remain off-limits to inspectors. Critics have said India could easily move radio-active material to these sites to enhance their weapons manufacturing.

Despite the objections the deal was being hailed as an effective path for India to meet its energy demands through a regulated source.

The U.S. will not be able to carry out the nuclear trade agreement until it is approved by Congress, something President George Bush is hoping to accomplish before they break for the November presidential election.
