Ford Warriors in Pink Continue Fight Against Breast Cancer

Automaker Utilizes Social Media to Raise Money, Awareness

October 20, 2010, Quincy, MASS… On the night of September 30, Ford headquarters illuminated the surrounding darkness of Dearborn, Michigan with a bright pink glow. The automaker, creator of the iconic F-150 and Mustang, used the symbolic lighting to mark the beginning of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The building will shine pink throughout October, a symbol of Ford’s commitment to fighting breast cancer through its Warriors in Pink campaign.

This October, Ford has been utilizing its social-media prowess to raise funds and awareness through the Warriors in Pink Facebook page. For every new “Like” the Warriors in Pink page gets in October, Ford is pledging a donation of $1 to Susan G. Komen for the Cure. The automaker will donate up to $100,000 in the fight against breast cancer, which claims 450,000 lives each year. Ford has also created a Facebook application for Warriors in Pink that enables fans to establish a dialogue with each other on the importance of early detection and provide support and solidarity to those affected with the disease.

Michael Quirk, general manager of Greater Boston Ford dealer Quirk Ford in Quincy, Massachusetts, is proud to represent a company that shows such a strong commitment to breast cancer awareness and prevention.

“This issue is important to all of us; everyone knows a friend or family member who has battled breast cancer, and it is great to see Ford playing such a major role in the fight against this terrible disease,” Quirk said. “Susan G. Komen for the Cure is an international organization, but their local affiliates do great work in this region, and we at Quirk Ford are excited that Ford’s Warriors in Pink are lending them their support through Facebook”

This is Ford’s 16th year supporting the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. To date, Ford Motor Company has raised more than $105 million for the organization, which provides support for research, awareness and breast cancer patients.

Warriors in Pink has also launched a line of apparel to help raise money. The clothing line carries the message of solidarity and support for the fight against breast cancer and features the 12 Warriors in Pink symbols that represent the different elements of Breast Cancer. Among the symbols are the Crowned Warrior, which represents the fact that breast cancer affects men as well as women, and the Warrior Circle, which symbolizes a united stand against the disease. Warriors in Pink donates 100% of all clothing and jewelry proceeds to Komen for the Cure.

“The Warriors in Pink campaign is doing more than just giving money,” said Quirk. “It is taking an active role in raising awareness and providing emotional support and connecting those who have been affected by the disease. The admirable efforts maintained by Ford through the Warriors in Pink, both this month and year-round, make me honored to be a Ford dealer.”

Warriors in Pink has also activated an interactive online quilt that allows those affected by the disease to create their own personalized patch to dedicate to survivors, those whose lives have been claimed by breast cancer and the friends and families of victims. Currently, almost 50,000 patches have been sewn onto the quilt, which would cover 3,239 square feet. It continues to grow each day, an online monument to the continuing struggles against the disease.
