Sudanese Government Launches Attacks in Darfur

Rebel groups in North Darfur have accused the Sudanese government of using military troops and militias to launch fresh attacks on two towns.

The towns of Disa and Birmaza, largely controlled by rebel groups opposed to the current Sudanese government, are at the center of the attacks according to the rebels.

Those rebel groups have claimed the government was using helicopters and airplanes along with militias to destroy and loot the towns in North Darfur as a means of securing control of the territory and gaining access to key transportation routes for oil reserves in that area.

The Sudanese military has not commented on the rebel claims but a joint United Nations-African Union peacekeeping force in Darfur has said it was investigating the allegations.
