Asif Ali Zardari, Widower of Former PM Benazir Bhutto, Wins Pakistan Presidential Election

Asif Ali Zardari has won a convincing victory in Pakistan’s presidential election, capturing 481 of the 702 votes cast by the national and four provincial assemblies.

Zardari, the widower of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, became the leader of the Pakistan People’s Party after his wife was assassinated last December. While corruption allegation dating back to when his wife was prime minister have followed Zardari he had been cast as the voice of change for a Pakistan looking to get past the resignation of Pervez Musharraf.

Of the four provincial assemblies, of which each had 65 votes, Zardari was clearly the favorite as he took all 65 in the Sindh province, 56 votes in the North West Frontier Province and 59 votes in the Balochistan province.

The only province that shied away from Zardari’s leadership was Punjab where he earned 22 votes. Punjab is heavily populated by supporters of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his PML-N party.

Sharif has shown mistrust for Zardari and pulled his PML-N party out of the current coalition government last week. That decision has caused concern for many as fears Pakistan could become a country divided could open them to insurgency.
