At least 24 people have been killed and several more left injured after a large landslide sent rocks and boulders cascading down the Muqattam cliffs and onto more than 50 houses in the impoverished Duwayqa district in Cairo, Egypt.
The early morning landslide struck while many were still sleeping and completely demolished a six-story building as well as homes in the area. Boulders estimated at 70 tons fell from high above and completely flattened homes, leaving victims buried under the debris.
Relatives and friends were forced to try and move the massive boulders by hand to search for victims until cranes could be brought in to assist.
There has been no word on what caused the landslide but many are blaming the housing that sits atop the Muqattam cliff. Those homes have no sewage system and so the waste water seeps into the soil, causing portions of the cliff to break free.
