Chris Todd threw for 248 yards, Ben Tate added 70 yards and a touchdown on the ground and the #9 Auburn Tigers (2-0) defense limited the Southern Miss Golden Eagles (1-1) to just 45 yards rushing in a 27-13 victory on Saturday.
Auburn built a 24-0 lead midway through the third quarter after getting touchdown runs from Tate and Tristan Davis in the second quarter and a 52-yard field goal from Wes Byrum and a one-yard TD run from Kodi Burns in the third.
Southern Miss managed to cut their deficit to 24-13 after touchdowns on a pair of Austin Davis tosses to Shawn Nelson, the first a one-yarder late in the third and the second a 17-yarder early in the fourth. Auburn answered the fourth quarter TD with a 23-yard field goal from Byrum to bury the Golden Eagles hopes of a comeback.
Auburn will travel to Mississippi State next week while Southern Miss will head to Arkansas State.
