Jimmy Clausen threw for 237 yards and 3 touchdowns, Golden Tate had 93 yards receiving and a TD and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish (1-0) capitalized on a huge turnover in the fourth quarter to beat the San Diego State Aztecs (0-2) 21-13 on Saturday.
Despite Notre Dame’s four turnovers in the game it was a fumble in the fourth quarter by San Diego State’s Brandon Sullivan that turned the tide. With the Aztecs up 13-7 Sullivan appeared to be heading for a touchdown when David Bruton managed to jar the ball loose and the Irish recovered in the endzone.
Clausen then marched the Irish down the field, completing all five of his pass attempts, the last a 38-yard TD to Tate that put the Irish up 14-13. Notre Dame tacked on their third score with two minutes left when Clausen found David Grimes on a 6-yard toss and the Irish survived the upset bid.
Notre Dame will play Michigan next week while San Diego State will face San Jose State.
