Movement for Democratic Change leader Morgan Tsvangirai has expressed growing frustration with the state of Zimbabwe’s government and has challenged President Robert Mugabe to a new election if he is unwilling to share power.
Tsvangirai’s MDC party and Mugabe’s ZANU-PF party have been holding power-sharing talks for several months after a highly contested presidential election kept Mugabe in office in June. Tsvangirai won the original election in March but officials determined he had not secured a large enough majority to avoid a run-off.
With less than a week before the June election Tsvangirai dropped out of the race after accusing Mugabe of using violence and intimidation against MDC supporters to control the vote.
South African President Thabo Mbeki stepped in to mediate talks between the two rival parties but those talks have produced no lasting agreement. While talks have established Tsvangirai should take the post of prime minister the extent of his powers has been the subject of debate.
The MDC has maintained Mugabe’s presidency should be ceremonial with the majority of authority coming from Tsvangirai while Mugabe wants to hold power over security forces and the power to appoint and dismiss ministers.
With the talks deadlocked Mugabe has since threatened to form a new government without the MDC. On Thursday Mugabe said the MDC had one week to agree to a deal or he would take action to form that government.
