NFL Scores: Matt Ryan, Michael Turner Have Huge Debuts as Atlanta Falcons Cage Detroit Lions

Matt Ryan threw a touchdown pass on his first NFL attempt and finished with 161 yards and a TD while Michael Turner broke a Falcons franchise record with 220 yards rushing and added two touchdowns in his debut as Atlanta beat the Detroit Lions 34-21 on Sunday.

The Falcons jumped to a quick 7-0 lead when Matt Ryan hit Michael Jenkins on a 62-yard TD pass on his first NFL passing attempt. From that point on it was the Michael Turner show as the former San Diego Charger pushed the Falcons lead to 14-0 on a 66-yard TD run and then added a 5-yarder and Atlanta was up 21-0 at the end of the first quarter.

Detroit managed to cut the deficit to 21-14 at halftime but a costly Jon Kitna interception early in the third quarter set up a Jason Elam 50-yard field goal to pad the Falcons lead and Atlanta held on the rest of the way.

The Atlanta offense racked up 474 yards of total offense, 318 of those coming on the ground as Jerious Norwood added 93 yards and a TD to go with Turner. The Falcons defense limited the Lions to just 62 yards rushing in the game.
