2008 U.S. Open Results: Serena Williams Beats Jelena Jankovic for Ninth Grand Slam Title

Serena Williams captured her third U.S. Open singles title and ninth Grand Slam title on Sunday night after knocking off Jelena Jankovic in straight sets 6-4, 7-5 and earning the number one ranking in women’s tennis.

While Williams wasn’t exactly flawless in capturing her first U.S. Open title since 2002 she did take advantage of the opportunities Jankovic presented, converting 5 of 16 break point opportunities. Williams hammered 44 winners compared to just 15 for Jankovic, who was appearing in her first Grand Slam finals.

Williams has accomplished a career Grand Slam with wins at Wimbledon, French Open, Australian Open and the U.S. Open.
