Doc Rivers Tests Negative for Cancer

NBA Coach Receives Good News

Boston Celtics head coach Doc Rivers has received some great news. After having undergone a biopsy on Sunday to determine if lesions in his throat were cancerous, Rivers recently received the great news that the test results came back negative.

Rivers, who, despite his serious on-court demeanor, is known to have a good sense of humor, said on Tuesday, "I'm going to be around for a little while, it looks like. I'm sure that disappoints everyone."

At the urging of forming Celtics coach Jim O'Brien, Rivers has been receiving annual throat tests for the past three years because of the stress that is placed on his throat as a professional coach. And anyone who has seen a Celtics timeout during a game can tell you that Rivers is not timid when it comes to raising his voice during games.

Doctors found a spot in his throat about three weeks ago, so Rivers decided to undergo the biopsy to make sure that it wasn't cancer. "I'm glad I did it," said Rivers. "I think most coaches should [get their throats tested] because we yell and use our throat a lot. It makes you more susceptible."

During practice on Tuesday, Rivers kept his talking to a minimum, leaving most of the vocalizations for assistant coach Lawrence Frank. "I kind of like Lawrence as my megaphone," said Rivers, jokingly. And what do the players think of Rivers' turning his voice down a notch? "I love it," said Kevin Garnett.
