October 21, 2010, Manchester, NH…In the same month that turbocharged direct-injection (TDI) models accounted for 27% of all U.S. Volkswagen sales, Esquire magazine celebrated the 2010
VW Golf TDI in its annual car awards, giving the newest addition to the TDI lineup the award for 2010’s Best Diesel Car. The award was a notable achievement for the Golf, an updated version of the iconic Volkswagen Rabbit, as fellow Esquire award winners included the Aston Martin Rapide, Jaguar XJ, Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG and Audi S4.
Esquire chose the Golf TDI for its sporty performance, especially in comparison to other models in the diesel and fuel-efficiency categories, where driving enjoyment is often sacrificed to boost mpg ratings. The Golf TDI’s clean-diesel technology succeeded where many hybrids have struggled, maintaining powerful and responsive off-the-line speed and delivering greater fuel efficiency than gasoline engines. The 2.0-liter TDI engine feeds the Golf 140 horsepower and an impressive 236 pound-feet of torque.
“When Esquire rates vehicles for their car awards, they are thinking about one thing, and that’s user experience,” said Frank Carnucci, general sales manager of Manchester, NH
Volkswagen dealer Quirk VW. “It’s an honor for the Golf to receive this award from such a distinguished magazine and be included among the world’s elite sports cars. It shows that the Golf TDI’s great fuel economy doesn’t prevent it from providing an exciting and fun driving experience.”
Volkswagen has produced diesel vehicles for America since 1977, beginning with the Golf’s predecessor, the Rabbit. Since then, Volkswagen has spent time perfecting their diesel technology for the U.S. market, resulting in their newest TDI models. Diesel-powered VWs achieve high levels of performance while increasing fuel economy and reducing emissions by up to 95%. The 2010 Golf TDI earns 30 mpg city and 42 mpg highway with an automatic transmission, the same high mileage Volkswagen offers in the Jetta TDI and Jetta SportWagen TDI.
While the engine under the hood is different for the Golf TDI, the diesel compact ships with the same body as the gas-powered Golf. Independent suspension and electronic stability control (ESC) complement the quick nature of the Golf, providing exceptional handling when making swift adjustments and turns.
New Hampshire Volkswagen drivers encounter a healthy amount of wet and snowy weather, and will benefit from the Golf’s advanced anti-slip regulation.
“The Golf TDI is a highly practical vehicle to own in New England. It saves owners money at the gas pump, navigates easily through congested city streets and helps drivers get through slick driving conditions safely,” said Carnucci. “But practical features aren’t why a vehicle is put in Esquire. The Golf TDI was chosen because of its power and sporty appeal. Customers looking for a vehicle for those joy rides on New Hampshire’s back roads this fall will find the excitement they are looking for in a clean-diesel Golf.”
