French President Nicolas Sarkozy is in Moscow holding talks with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev concerning the continued crisis involving the former Soviet republic of Georgia.
At the heart of the discussions is the continued presence of Russian troops inside Georgia following a ceasefire agreement that stipulated those troops would return to their position prior to the start of the Aug. 7 conflict.
While France, along with the rest of the EU, has maintained Russia is in violation of the agreement Medvedev has stated the deal allowed for “peacekeepers” to remain in the area. Russian troops are currently in the breakaway regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia along with “buffer zones” designated by Russia.
Russia has recognized the independence of both South Ossetia and Abkhazia but the EU and the United States have declared Russia was violating Georgia’s “territorial integrity” by keeping troops in the area.
Sarkozy is expected to travel to Georgia and meet with Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili following his visit with Medvedev.
