Hurricane Ike Hammers Cuba with Strong Winds, Heavy Rain, Destroys Homes along Coast

Hurricane Ike was downgraded to a Category 2 when it hit Cuba but the strong winds and large storm surges have left the northern coast of the island severely damaged as many homes have been left in ruins.

More than 800,000 Cubans were evacuated prior to the arrival of Hurricane Ike, many of them will be forced to stay in shelters as heavy flooding has made access to their homes nearly impossible..

Ike made landfall near Punta Lucrecia, some 500 miles south east of Havana and is expected to hit the capital city on Tuesday morning, about the same time it could hit the Florida Keys.

Hurricane Ike has been blamed for severe damage to about 80 percent of the homes in Turks and Caicos before dumping more rain on an already devastated Haiti.
