In one of the more highly anticipated matchups of the NFL Week 1 schedule the Denver Broncos will take on the Oakland Raiders at 10:15 p.m. ET with both teams carrying AFC playoff aspirations.
While Jay Cutler showed signs of a star quarterback last year the Broncos signal caller will need to be more consistent in 2008 if the Broncos are to capture the AFC West. Cutler tossed 20 touchdowns a year ago but also threw 14 interceptions as the Broncos posted a 7-9 record.
Cutler will have to start the opener without the Bronco’s top receiver Brandon Marshall who is suspended for the first game due to a violation of the league’s personal conduct policy. Adding to the offensive woes for the Broncos is a completely new starting line and an unproven backfield.
There are just as many questions for the Raiders as JaMarcus Russell will finally assume the full-time role after a troubling rookie season in which a contract dispute kept him off the field for much of the season. Oakland will likely feature rookie running back Darren McFadden in many of their sets and he will get support from Justin Fargas.
Those two backs will face challenges as the Broncos defense has been revamped to deal with the run and with Russell an unproven quarterback that defense will likely concentrate on the run.
