Ace Russian tennis star Maria Sharapova and Sasha Vujacic of the Los Angeles Lakers are engaged to be married, a rumor that is now confirmed by both Vujacic and Sharapova's agent, Max Eisenbud.
According to some reports, Vujacic proposed Sharapova at his home in Manhattan Beach, Calif. on Tuesday and she was quick to accept.
We are engaged and are both really happy. It's good and now we can focus on other things," Vujacic said Thursday night. The couple decided to make it official on the first anniversary of the day they first met. "It was probably old school," Vujacic added.
Sharapova is currently ranked number 18 in the singles rankings and has failed to win any Grand Slam tournament this year with rather quick evictions in most of them.
Vujacic plays the guard for the Lakers and led them to victory in the 2010 NBA Finals by scoring two crucial free throws.
The union is unique in the sense that both Sasha and Sharapova are quite tall; Sasha is 6 feet, 7 inches and Sharapova is 6 feet two.
The engagement has added fuel to the gossiping machines with many criticizing Sharapova's decision of getting engaged at a young age of 23. Those in the professional tennis circles will also be watching the move closely as Sharapova is still considered one of the best players and has great chances of returning to her trademark shots and volleys.
There are currently no indications from both players on when they will take the big step and tie the knot.
