A 20-year-old man was killed Friday in a shark attack at Surf Beach on Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. Surf Beach is located in Santa Barbara County about 130 miles northwest of Los Angeles.
A base spokesperson said the unidentified man was body boarding with a friend with the attack occurred. According to a source, the man’s leg was “bitten off” and he bled to death.
Surf Beach was closed shortly after the attack. Two other base beaches -- Wall and Minuteman – were also closed. All three will remain closed for 72 hours.
"Our first responders were on scene to assist in rescue efforts. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends,” Col. Richard Boltz said in a statement.
