North Korean Leader Kim Jong-il Said to Have Suffered Stroke, Absent from National Parade

The health of North Korean leader Kim Jong-il has been the topic of much speculation with many believing the 66-year-old has suffered a stroke.

Kim was missing from the country’s National Parade in Pyongyang on Tuesday, further fueling rumors that the reclusive dictator is in bad health. Under normal circumstances Kim would have overseen the military ranks during the parade but that responsibility fell on the shoulders of the country’s second most senior figure, Kim Yong-nam.

Kim has not been seen in public for more than a month and while that is not uncommon for the leader there have been reports that a team of Chinese doctors were recently summoned. According to some U.S. officials Kim Jong-il suffered a stroke on Aug. 14 but those reports have not been confirmed.
