Hurricane Ike made its way along Cuba’s southwest coast and is now pounding the capital city of Havana as heavy rain has drenched the island and strong storm surges have contributed to massive flooding throughout Cuba.
More than one million people have been evacuated and relocated to shelters due to slow moving Hurricane Ike. On Monday nearly 175,000 people were relocated from Havana as officials braced for the storm that damaged 80 percent of the homes in the Turks and Caicos as well as dumped more rain on an already devastated Haiti.
There has been growing concern about whether Havana would be able to sustain the strong winds of Hurricane Ike as many of the buildings within the city are old and may be unstable. While Ike has been downgraded to a Category One hurricane the 80 mph winds could still cause severe damage as it pounds away.
The strength of Hurricane Ike is expected to grow as it enters the waters of the Gulf of Mexico, already causing the U.S. Gulf Coast to issue alerts.
