John McCain and Barack Obama to Mark Anniversary of September 11 Attacks with Stop at World Trade Center Site

Republican presidential candidate John McCain and his Democratic rival Barack Obama will mark the 7th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks by appearing together at the World Trade Center site in Manhattan.

In a joint statement released on Saturday McCain and Obama noted, “All of us came together on 9/11 -- not as Democrats or Republicans but as Americans. In smoke-filled corridors and on the steps of the Capitol; at blood banks and at vigils -- we were united as one American family. On Thursday, we will put aside politics and come together to renew that unity, to honor the memory of each and every American who died, and to grieve with the families and friends who lost loved ones.”

McCain and Obama plan to recognize not only the victims who lost their lives in the 9/11 terrorist attacks but also the families of those who died along with emergency response teams that were at the scene of the World Trade Center as well as at the Pentagon.

Nearly 3,000 people were killed on Sept. 11, 2001 when two planes slammed into the World Trade Center in New York, a third plane hit the Pentagon in Washington and a fourth plane crashed into a field in Shanksville, Pa.
