Asif Ali Zardari, widower of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, was sworn in as Pakistan’s newest president on Tuesday and within moments declared his focus as leader would be on fighting Islamist insurgency.
Zardari, who won a clear majority of the votes cast by the national and four provincial assemblies, replaces Pervez Musharraf who resigned from the presidency on Aug. 18 rather than face impeachment charges.
During the ceremony Zardari took a moment to recognize Bhutto, stating “I accept the presidency of Pakistan in the name of... Benazir Bhutto. I accept this in her name and in the name of all the martyrs of democracy.”
Alost immediately after becoming Pakistan’s 12th president the Pakistan People's Party leader appeared with Afghanistan’s President Hamid Karzi and vowed a united fight against terrorism and a concentrated effort to work together to halt Islamist militants.
While Pakistan is facing rising inflation and a weakening economy as well as political division amongst members of PPP rivals PML-N, led by former PM Nawaz Sharif.
Zardari won an overwhelming majority in the recent presidential election, capturing 481 of the 702 votes cast by the national and four provincial assemblies.
