Russia has announced they will maintain their military presence in the breakaway regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia while removing troops from positions inside Georgia.
Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov announced Russia’s intentions stating, “Russian troops will remain on the territory of South Ossetia and Abkhazia on request of their leaders in parliament.”
Russian President Dmitry Medvedev recently announced his country recognized the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia, a move that angered the U.S and European Union who have called Russia’s recent actions in the two regions an attack on Georgia’s “territorial integrity.”
Despite international condemnation Medvedev, along with Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, have been adamant in their pledge to defend the regions from future attacks from Georgia. They now plan to station about 3,800 troops in each region to ensure those attacks don’t occur.
Russia had held positions within Georgia following their brief conflict which began on Aug. 7. Those positions were considered “buffer zones” by the Russian military but will now be removed as part of a deal signed by Medvedev on Monday.
That deal assured Medvedev that the EU would have observers monitor the Georgia’s actions towards the two breakaway regions to prevent fresh attacks.
