The often stagnant power-sharing talks between Zimbabwe’s President Robert Mugabe and Movement for Democratic Change opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai have reportedly taken a positive turn as both men appear optimistic following their latest discussions.
Mugabe, leader of the ZANU-PF party and Tsvangirai have been in Harare where South African President Thabo Mbeki has been mediating talks.
While both sides have apparently agreed that Tsvangirai should become prime minister, the extent of his power has been the subject for much debate. As president Mugabe has said that he would maintain control over the military and have the authority to appoint and dismiss ministers.
Tsvangirai has said Mugabe’s role as president should be ceremonial with the majority of power resting in the prime minister’s office.
On Tuesday both sides met again and following the discussions they each felt they could have the talks wrapped up on Wednesday. Tsvangirai was quoted by Reuters as saying, “Nothing has been concluded yet but we are hoping that tomorrow [Wednesday] we will be able to look at the outstanding issues.”
Tsvangirai collected the most votes in Zimbabwe’s presidential election in March but officials ruled he did not secure a large enough majority to avoid a run-off. With less than a week before the June run-off Tsvangirai dropped out of the race declaring the election had been neither free nor fair and accused Mugabe of using violence and intimidation to dissuade MDC supporters from voting.
