Shawne Merriman to Undergo Knee Surgery, Will Miss 2008 Season

San Diego Chargers All-Pro linebacker Shawne Merriman will miss the entire season after he undergoes knee surgery.

Merriman tore two ligaments in his left knee and will undergo the surgery soon, thus ending his 2008 season and putting a damper on the Chargers' Super Bowl hopes.

"Shawne informed me he did not feel right and thought it best to shut it down," Chargers general manager A.J. Smith said in a statement. "The road to winning the AFC West just got more difficult, but not impossible. Nothing is impossible. Shawne is a great player and an inspirational leader. He will be missed. We wish him a successful surgery and a speedy recovery."

Merriman entered the season saying that he will play despite the injury. On Sunday, he wore a knee brace and had just two tackles and no sacks in the Chargers' surprising 26-24 loss to the Panthers, who played without their star Steve Smith.

During training camp, Merriman said that the posterior cruciate and lateral collateral ligaments in his left knee were torn. In the offseason, he had arthroscopic surgery to repair torn cartilage in the knee.

Merriman, 24, had an NFL-high 39½ sacks in the past three seasons and played in three straight Pro Bowls. He is considered by many to be the premier linebacker in the NFL.
