Thailand to Elect New Prime Minister on Friday

One day after the Constitutional Court ruled that Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej should be removed from office for appearing on a cooking show Thailand’s political parties are holding talks to determine who will be elevated to the vacant office.

According to Sundaravej’s People Power Party, the largest of the six-member coalition government, the next leader should come from the PPP. That opinion has been contested by the other parties who have all angled to replace the 73-year-old with one of their own.

Thailand has experienced internal chaos over the past several weeks as demonstrators have marched demanding the removal of Sundaravej. Those marches have elevated into occupation of key government buildings, among them the prime minister’s office.

There is still a chance Sundaravej could be re-nominated but protestors have already promised if that were to happen they would continue their demonstrations.

A decision from Parliament is expected on Friday.
