Death Toll in Northern China Mudslides Rise to 128, Several Still Missing

A wall of mud said to have be three stories high and 660 yards wide swallowed buildings, a market and some homes in the northern Chinese province of Shanxi on Monday and officials have now placed the death toll at 128 people with several more still missing.

Rescuers have searched through about 70 percent of the debris but as the days mount hopes for finding survivors diminish.

The cause of the landslide has been attributed to an illegal mining company who had been using a dam as a retaining wall for the waste left after extracting ore from rocks. As the area was pounded by heavy rains the dam collapsed sending the wave of mud downhill.
