World Cup 2010 Qualifying Scores: Zambia Tops Togo on Goal from Felix Katongo

Felix Katongo moved Zambia closer to their first World Cup finals on Wednesday after scoring 33 minutes into a Group 11 qualifying match with Togo, providing a 1-0 cushion that stood until the final whistle.

Now sitting atop Group 11 play Zambia is almost assured of reaching the next stage of qualifying for the World Cup 2010 in South Africa.

As for Togo, the World Cup squad of 2006 is becoming a distant memory as they are now in danger of being eliminated from contention. They were forced to play without their captain Emmanuel Adebayor who refused to fly to the match.

According to some reports Adebayor feared the jet would crash and said he would only travel if Togo Football Federation President Tata Avlessi Adaglo accompanied the team on the flight, he could not attend the match because he was making funeral arrangements for his mother.

For Togo to have any chance of advancing they will have to beat Swaziland next month.
