ESPN/USA Today Top 25 College Football Rankings: USC #1, Set to Battle Ohio State

USC remains at the top spot in the ESPN/USA Today Top 25 college football rankings despite their bye week.

The Trojans routed Virginia, 52-7, on Aug. 30 in their 2008 season opener. Southern Cal had a bye week as they gear up for the most anticipated game of the college football season, their battle with No. 3 Ohio State on Saturday.

The ESPN/USA Today poll dropped Ohio State even further despite their 26-14 victory against Ohio. The Buckeyes won sparingly in the game as they played without their star running back Chris “Beanie” Wells.

Oklahoma and Florida round out the top five as the top seven remained the same. Then-No. 8 West Virginia plummeted after getting drilled by unranked East Carolina. ECU then moved into the top 25, falling at No. 20.

Then-No. 24 South Carolina and then-no. 25 Illinois dropped out of the top 25. The Gamecocks dropped after losing to unranked Vanderbilt, but Illinois won, but was bumped by ECU and California’s huge wins on Saturday. Cal defeated Washington State. 66-3.
