AP Top 25 College Football Rankings: USC Takes Top Spot, Gears Up for Ohio State

USC remains at the top spot in the AP Top 25 college football rankings despite their bye week.

The Trojans routed Virginia, 52-7, on Aug. 30 in their 2008 season opener. Southern Cal had a bye week as they gear up for the most anticipated game of the college football season, their battle with No. 3 Ohio State on Saturday.

The AP poll dropped Ohio State even further despite their 26-14 victory against Ohio. The Buckeyes won sparingly in the game as they played without their star running back Chris “Beanie” Wells.

Oklahoma and Florida round out the top five as the top seven remained the same. Then-No. 8 West Virginia plummeted after getting drilled by unranked East Carolina. ECU then moved into the top 25, falling at No. 25. ECU skyrocketed to No. 14.

Then-No. 23 UCLA and then-No. 24 South Carolina dropped out of the top 25. The Gamecocks dropped after losing to unranked Vanderbilt, while UCLA had a bye week, but was bumped out by ECU and California’s huge wins on Saturday. Cal defeated Washington State, 66-3.
