The Large Hadron Collider, the world's most expensive scientific experiment, began its operation on Wednesday.
The Large Hadron Collider, the world's largest and highest-energy particle accelerator complex, is contained within a circular tunnel with a circumference of 17 miles. It lies underneath the Franco-Swiss border near Geneva, Switzerland.
The LHC is funded by and built in collaboration with over eight thousand physicists from over eighty-five countries as well as hundreds of universities and laboratories.
CERN successfully fired the protons around the LHC tunnel in stages. The particles were fired in a clockwise direction into the accelerator and successfully steered around it.
The Large Hadron Collider successfully completed its first major test. After a series of trial runs, two white dots flashed on a computer screen showing the protons traveled the full length of the collider.
It took less than one hour to guide the stream of particles around its inaugural circuit. CERN next successfully sent a beam of protons in a counterclockwise direction.
The countdown now begins for October 21 when the first high-energy collisions are planned to take place.
Due to the size and power of the LHC, there have been several risks and danger involved with the project. Many believe the collider will create a black hole. However, several CERN scientists refuted the black hole theories, stating that the risks and danger of the project are not nearly as imminent as many believe.
