September 11 Anniversary Marked by Ceremony at Ground Zero in New York

The seventh anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks in which two hijacked passenger planes were slammed into the World Trade Center’s Twin Towers, a third hijacked plane hit the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. and a fourth crashed into a field in Shanksville, PA, is being marked by several ceremonies in the U.S. on Thursday.

Dedicated a new memorial at the Pentagon where 125 people were killed inside the building and an additional 59 on board American Flight 77. The memorial was built on a 1.9-acre plot of land within view of the crash site.

Ground Zero, the site where American Flight 11 and United Flight 175 hit the Twin Towers, has been holding events throughout the day with a rollcall of the victims, a four-minute moment of silence, and other tributes to mark 9/11.

In the afternoon Republican presidential nominee John McCain and Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama will lay wreaths at the site.

Nearly 3,000 people were killed on September 11, 2001.
