Moment of Silence on September 11 Marks 7th Anniversary of 9/11

September 11, 2008 marks the seventh anniversary of 9/11, the deadly terrorist attacks on the Pentagon and World Trade Center.

Hundreds of families gathered at the newly-dedicated Pentagon Memorial and Ground Zero, the site where the World Trade Center fell, on Wednesday as they heard the names of the September 11 victims called, in addition to recognizing a moment of silence.

The moment of silence took place at 8:46 a.m. EST, the exact time when the first hijacked plane struck the World Trade Center in New York on September 11, 2001. Other moments of silence were planned for the times when the second plane hit and when the towers fell, all of which coincided with the timeline on Sept. 11.

Thousands of Americans took part in the moment of silence in their efforts to continue remembering the attacks on September 11 despite not being present at the memorials.

Services will also be held in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, where Flight 93, one of the hijacked planes, crashed. John McCain will speak at the Shanksville 9/11 ceremony, while Barack Obama was on hand at Ground Zero.

President George W. Bush spoke at the new Pentagon Memorial, which was dedicated as the names of the victims were read aloud to mourners there. The Pentagon Memorial was built for $22 million on 1.9 acres of land adjacent to the Pentagon and within view of the crash site.

The Pentagon Memorial 9/11 ceremony included a wreath laying, music and the reading of the names of the 184 people who perished on American Airlines Flight 77 and inside the building.

Since the attacks on September 11, 2001, the date has been referred to as Patriot Day, becoming a holiday in many school districts and office buildings. Patriot Day is a day to honor the firefighters, police officers, emergency personnel, and ordinary citizens who risked their lives on Sept. 11, 2001.
