Leonard Ngaluma, district commissioner of Eldoret in Kenya’s Rift Valley, has given nearly 10,000 Kenyans who fled their homes during electoral violence until Friday morning to leave a camp.
While most of the families in the camp have been given about $140 to aid in their move many still fear returning to their homes. Ngaluma, speaking to the BBC, has called those refusing to leave “opportunists” who were looking for handouts.
More than 600,000 Kenyans were displaced during the December 2007 presidential election and Eldoret was among the most affected areas.
Ngaluma was confident those living in the camp would leave on Friday saying, “I have no doubt in my mind that we shall be able to close the showground without having to use excessive force.”
